History and Culture of Kalugumalai
The city was earlier known as Araimalai or Thirumalai and some of the epics mention that a palace for the pandya official called Ettimannan used to exist here. The place also happens to be the scene of Kalugumalai riots of 1895. Tamil is the local language spoken here. As per the census of 2011, city has a population of 14,738 people. Kalugumalai is home to many popular religious places that are worth visiting.Jaina Abode: The areas is known for the Jain cave temple and its architecture. There exist many rock relief sculptures here dating back to 8th-9th century AD. There is also a rock cut image of Bhagawan Parshwanatha here flanked by two Yaksha along with images of other Tirthankaras.
Vettuvan Koil: It is an ancient Hindu temple that is believed to have been built between 8th and 9th century AD. The temple has a unique architecture and is built amidst mountain where 7.5 meter of the mountain is excavated in a rectangular fashion. The temple is sculpted in the middle from a single piece of rock. The carvings in the temple reflect the southern style of Padya era. The beautiful sculptures of Uma Maheswarar, Dakshinamoorthy, Vishnu and Brahma can be found on top of the temple.
Kalugasalamoorthy temple: This is another ancient temple that dates back to 18th century and is dedicated to Lord Murugan. Lord Murugan can be seen here with his wife Deivanai.
Our Lady of Lourdes Church: It is the biggest Roman Catholic Church in the area and is believed to be more than 100 years old.
Vinayaga temple and Ayyanar temple are other places that one can visit in Kalugumalai.
